A Quick Guide to Forklift Types

From Electric to Internal Combustion—Know Which Class Fits Your Operation

Choosing the right forklift starts with understanding equipment classes. The Industrial Truck Association (ITA) categorizes forklifts into different classes based on power source, tire type, and application. At Southeast Handling Systems, we offer Bobcat forklifts in Classes I through V, covering a wide range of indoor and outdoor needs.

Here’s a breakdown of what each class means and when to use it:

Class I – Electric Motor Rider Forklifts

Battery-powered forklifts are designed for indoor use. These are clean, quiet, and efficient options ideal for warehouses and distribution centers.

Best For:
- Narrow aisles
- Indoor operations
- Lower maintenance needs

Class II – Electric Narrow Aisle Forklifts

Designed for very tight warehouse spaces, Class II trucks maximize storage by operating in narrow aisles.

Best For:
- High-density racking
- Warehouse space optimization
- Electric-only indoor use

Class III – Electric Pallet Jacks and Stackers

Walk-behind or ride-on electric trucks used to move pallets. These are compact and cost-effective for short-distance transport.

Best For:
- Loading docks
- Retail and backroom operations
- Low-volume material movement

Class IV – Internal Combustion (IC) Forklifts with Cushion Tires

These forklifts run on LP gas or diesel and are built for smooth, indoor surfaces like concrete. Cushion tires provide a tight turning radius.

Best For:
- Indoor manufacturing or distribution
- Heavier loads
- Enclosed facilities

Class V – Internal Combustion (IC) Forklifts with Pneumatic Tires

Built for outdoor or mixed-surface use, these forklifts are equipped with air-filled or solid pneumatic tires that handle uneven terrain.

Best For:
- Lumber yards, construction sites
- Outdoor loading areas
- Rough or uneven surfaces
