Workplace Safety Starts Here
Forklifts are essential to efficient material handling, but they also pose serious risks if not operated correctly. With June being Forklift Safety Month, it's the perfect time to revisit the fundamentals. Here are five forklift safety tips every operator—and every facility—should prioritize:
1. Inspect Your Forklift Before Every Shift
A daily walk-around inspection helps catch small issues before they become big problems. Check for leaks, damaged tires, faulty lights, and test the brakes and horn. Make sure all safety features are functional, and don’t operate the unit if anything seems off.
2. Know Your Load Limits
Overloading a forklift compromises its balance and increases the risk of tipping. Always follow the manufacturer’s load capacity and ensure loads are properly balanced, centered, and secure before lifting or moving.
3. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Forklift operators should always watch for pedestrians, blind spots, and floor obstructions. Use horns at intersections, mirrors for added visibility, and maintain a clear line of sight. Safety is a team effort—communication is key.
4. Drive with Caution
Speeding is one of the most common causes of forklift accidents. Operate at a safe, controlled speed—especially when turning, reversing, or operating in congested areas. Keep forks low to the ground while traveling.
5. Only Trained Operators Should Use Forklifts
OSHA requires operators to be trained and certified. Ongoing training and refresher courses help reinforce best practices and reduce risks. Never allow untrained personnel to operate equipment.
Safety Starts with You
Staying safe isn’t just about rules—it’s about responsibility. Forklift Safety Month is a great reminder to lead by example and build a workplace culture focused on safety.
